Let your state congressional officials know that you support the United Way public policy agenda for 2011, which focuses on:

  • Targeting HOPE grants for technical and career education to Georgians most in need of job training and strengthening pathways to post-secondary study by aligning existing resources such as Georgia Work Ready, CareerOneStop and adult education programs.
  • State leadership to facilitate the availability of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in every community and to make quality financial services accessible to underserved Georgians.
  • Savings, financial literacy and asset development among low-income Georgians through Individual Development Accounts, matched savings plans that work much like employer-based 401 (k) programs.
  • Leveraging and aligning existing federal resources such as TANF, other formula grants and tax credits to help Georgians at risk of dependency transition to steady and gainful employment through education, job placement and mentoring, child care subsidies, vehicle ownership and affordable housing.
  • A refundable state Earned Income Tax Credit for households with low earnings to offset the effect of reinstating state sales and use taxes on groceries or applying these taxes to basic services such as child care.
