United Way and Asset Building
The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Individual Development Account (IDA) Program is an asset-development program for low-to-moderate income individuals. Since 1997, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta has used Individual Development Accounts as one strategy to help people with low-to-moderate incomes save for the purchase of an asset and enter the economic mainstream. The objective of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta IDA program is to assist people with limited means in achieving financial independence and becoming financially self-sufficient by providing the skills to:
- Develop a budget and set goals
- Establish regular savings habits
- Invest in assets
IDA's can be used to:
- Purchase a home
- Attend job training or post-secondary education
The IDA program meets these objectives by providing financial education, case management, homeownership counseling and other asset-goal specific training to IDA participants. Since it's inception, more than 800 people have successfully completed the program and either purchased a home, opened a business or went on to additional education for economic success. The IDA program has been operating for more than 10 years, with no foreclosures.
The IDA program is only available through approved community partners.
