Junior Leadership Conference

On Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta’s Young Professional Leaders (YPL) group hosted its inaugural Junior Leadership Conference at the West End Academy. In support of United Way’s education focus area, the goal of the conference was to mentor high school juniors and seniors to prepare them for future success in college and the work force.
Approximately 27 metro Atlanta teenagers drop out of school each day and make about $1 million less over a lifetime than college graduates. During the conference, more than 25 students at risk for drop out were assigned a mentor and attended interactive workshops led by YPL volunteers in the fields of: leadership/communication, financial literacy and education.
“Atlanta has a robust population of successful young professionals, and the goal of YPL and United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta is to leverage this great resource to help strengthen the communities where we live and work,” says Katerina Taylor, YPL board member and SunTrust marketing professional. |
