Meet Donna Burnham, 211 Director

Image Hi Partners:

My name is Donna Burnham and I’ve been working with United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta since 1995. In 2003, I accepted the challenge and became the Director of the nation’s first three digit number that offers health and human services. I oversee a staff of fifty, which includes: Training; Quality and Shift Managers; Call Center Agents; Receptionist Staff and the Special Project Director.

United Way 211 celebrated ten years of answering the call on June 12, 2007. We want to thank you for ALL of your support throughout the years! Together we have touched many lives. It takes only everyone to lead the way.

You are appreciated for all that you do!

United Way 211 Accreditation

Since 2003, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta 211 is the only certified 211 in Georgia. Accreditation determines whether an organization meets the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems’ (AIRS) Standards for Professional Information and Referral through a comprehensive process.

This year we are working on the re-accreditation process which will take about six to eight months to complete. As part of this process, it is necessary for us to send the organizations that are located in the metro Atlanta area and are part of the 211 database a questionnaire about the effectiveness of our service delivery. When you receive it, we ask that you fill it out and send it back in the self-addressed stamp envelope by the due date.

Your assistance with this part of the re-accreditation process is appreciated. If you have any questions, or you need a copy of the questionnaire, contact Donna Burnham at 404.614.2906 or by email

Free Services for Nonprofits from IBM

Hello Everyone!

What comes to mind when you think of IBM? Computers… Maybe laptops?

IBM is a much different company today than it was just ten years ago. You may be surprised to know that we no longer sell computers, we are the second largest software company in the world, and we offer dozens of business and IT services that can help your organization achieve its goals.

Did you know there are more than 8,000 IBMers living and working in Georgia? And what’s more, in 2006 Georgia’s IBMers volunteered more than 49,000 hours and donated more than $1.65 million through employee charitable contributions.

IBM has also developed a number of free online tools that are available to nonprofits and small businesses. Please visit us online to check out the SME Toolkit which offers free business management information and training for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on accounting and finance, human resources, marketing and sales, operations, and information technology. The SME Toolkit offers a wide range of how-to articles, business forms, free business software, online training, self-assessment exercises, quizzes, and resources to help entrepreneurs, business owners, and managers in emerging markets and developing countries start, finance, formalize, and grow their organizations.

In Atlanta, nonprofit organizations have a designated sales resource who understands the challenges and the unique needs of the nonprofit sector. Please consider spending a few moments of time to learn about the new IBM. I would love to help you brainstorm ways you can use technology to achieve your organizational goals. Feel free to call me at 404.291.3997 or email me at ptowne@us.ibm.com to set up time to meet.

Best wishes for a wonderful summer!

Mission
Midtown Assistance Center, Inc. (MAC) provides emergency assistance to the working poor of midtown and downtown Atlanta to prevent homelessness and hunger during periods of crisis.

Over the past 21 years, Midtown Assistance Center has provided hard-working families with basic necessities such as rent and utility assistance, groceries, work clothes, and transportation to employment and interviews. Over 6,200 requests for assistance were met in 2006, preventing eviction of 651 families, and disconnection of utilities in 492 households.

MAC helps people who work in low-paying jobs and live at the edge of poverty. On a daily basis they are able to meet their own needs, but when an emergency arises they may not have the resources to recover. We are often the only safety net that stands between these men and women and homelessness.

MAC’s philosophy exemplifies excellence and sets us apart from other assistance programs in numerous ways:
1. Client needs are met in one visit
2. Often we pay a full month’s payment on rent/mortgage and utilities
3. Assistance is provided every working day of every month
4. Clients are seen within 24 hours of their call for help
5. Assistance is provided before clients incur late, warrant , or disconnection fees
6. Volunteers help minimize overhead
7. Our facility, utilities and parking are provided at no cost to MAC by Atlanta First United Methodist Church

How the Program Works
Those seeking assistance are interviewed by telephone; if the individual qualifies for assistance, an appointment is made. At the time of the on-site visit, the client must show current identification and documentation to support their assistance request. After the interview and verification process, assistance is provided.

Our most recent rent follow-up showed that 83 percent of our clients remained housed for at least six months after receiving rent assistance. This is a tremendous confirmation of the impact that even minimal assistance can have in the prevention of homelessness.

Funding Needs
Congregations provide the base for our operation, and government funding allows us to extend our geographical boundaries. The remainder of the budget must be secured each year from individuals, corporations and foundations. Donations, unless otherwise designated, go directly to client assistance.
