The United Way Tocqueville Society was
named after the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who admired Americans and their unique spirit of giving.
Formed in March of 1984, the Tocqueville Society has a mission to deepen individual understanding of, commitment
to and support of United Way's work, which is advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better
life for all. The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions around
the world who have devoted time, talent and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our community's
most serious issues. Membership in the Tocqueville Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least
$10,000 annually to United Way.
Howell Adams chaired metro Atlanta's first Tocqueville Society effort in 1985, recruiting 36 members.
By 1991, the United Way Tocqueville Society doubled its membership to 75. By 1999, under the leadership
of Guy Millner, metro Atlanta's United Way Tocqueville Society became the largest in the country with
more than 631 members. For the next four years, the metro Atlanta Tocqueville Society continued its
growth, led by Ed Heys, Jr. While serving as the Tocqueville Society chair for United Way of Metropolitan
Atlanta, Ed also served as the National Growth Initiative chair for United Way of America.
Specifically, the United Way of Metro Atlanta Tocqueville Society aims to...
- Change lives through philanthropic leadership by focusing on the building blocks for a
better life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a
family through retirement, and good physical and mental health
- Communicate the vital role of personal philanthropic action to address the underlying
causes of societal problems and thus promote lasting change
- Foster philanthropic action and voluntary community service
- Expand high-level personal giving
For each year since 1999, the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Tocqueville Society has
been recognized for having the most Tocqueville members nationwide. Due to their personal
leadership and philanthropic involvement, metro Atlanta Tocqueville Society members are achieving
a lasting impact in our community. The Tocqueville Society chair for 2008-09 is Gary Price.

Women of Tocqueville: An evening of appreciation

On Cinqo de Mayo, the Women of Tocqueville held its annual appreciation event. The turnout was great, in spite of holiday and the weekday traffic. The event was held at the sponosor building, The Coca-Cola Company Headquarters.
The guest speaker, Pamela Reynolds, a United Way IDA program graduate, spoke about her company, Exclusively You Shoe Design, and her personal achievements. She shared how United Way-supported organizations have helped her reach her entrepreneruial goals. She was an inspiration.
Mary Buckle-Searle was thanked for her outstanding service as the 2008 Women of Tocqueville board chair.
