United Way Tocqueville Society

The United Way Tocqueville Society is designed to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals to United Way and to recognize the deep commitment to service. Membership in the Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually.

Established in 1984, the United Way Tocqueville Society is named after the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who admired Americans' unique spirit of giving. Howell Adams chaired the first effort in metro Atlanta in 1985, recruiting 36 members. By 1991 the United Way Tocqueville Society doubled its membership to 75. By 2001, under the leadership of Guy Millner, metro Atlanta's United Way Tocqueville Society became the largest in the country with more than 1,000 members. For the next four years the United Way Tocqueville Society continued its growth, led by Ed Heys, Jr. Ed served as not only Tocqueville Society chair for United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, he also serves as the National Growth Initiative chair for United Way of America.

For 2007–08 the United Way Tocqueville Society chair is Gary Price.
