Labor and United Way

Whether organizing a union blood drive, coordinating disaster relief efforts, addressing legislative issues, or attending to the needs of disabled persons, the partnership between United Way and Labor is powerful and reliable.

Members of affiliated unions receive educational opportunities that help them to stimulate community involvement among co-workers and retirees of their union and labor council. Non-partisan voter education designed to increase voter registration and voter turnout is just one of the ways the United Way is working with Atlanta's labor community.

The Atlanta Labor Council sponsors fundraising events for United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta's Community Impact Fund and other charitable funds. The Council's Community Services Committee works closely with the chairperson of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta Campaign Cabinet and the AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison to develop an annual campaign plan.

Atlanta/North Georgia Labor Council Partners With Rebuilding Together Atlanta

On June 9, 2007, volunteers from International Union of Allied Painters and Trades (IUPAT) Local 193, Communications Workers of America Local 3250, and United Auto Workers Local 882 partnered with Rebuilding Together Atlanta (RTA) to help a homeowner in southwest Atlanta have a nicer place to live. AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison Janine Brown, working with Jan Jordan, director of RTA, organized the event. Louis Partain, business representative from IUPAT District Council 77, brought members from Local 193 who had special skills and made the work go very quickly. The volunteers scraped and painted 13 exterior windows and a door, along with the walls and ceilings of two rooms. After a quick lunch break provided by RTA, the volunteers made short order of the work and were finished by 2:30 p.m. The homeowner was thrilled with the improvements and impressed with the skill level of the team.

For more information on this and other projects and events sponsored by the Atlanta/North Georgia Labor Council, please contact Janine Brown, AFL-CIO community services liaison at 404.527.7417 or jbrown@unitedwayatlanta.org.

IBEW Local 613 partners with Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association & USO

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 613, has a great facility located at 513 Pulliam St. SW. The Local owns 3 buildings which are the site of not only the offices of their Local Union, but many other Union offices as well; an auditorium that hosts many meetings of labor organizations and community partners; and a building that houses the apprenticeship program. They also have a good-sized parking lot. All this is within walking distance of the Atlanta Braves Stadium. You may have noticed the building as you drive on I-75/85 by the Airtran Peach that rests on top of it. Now you will also recognize the location by a large sign on the fence that says, "Support the Troops." Local 613 supports the troops with more than just the sign and you can, too.

Members of the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association (AVVBA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 613 (IBEW) present at check for $12,000 to the USO from proceeds of our 'Support Our Troops' project during the Atlanta Braves 2007 season. In the photo from left to right: IBEW member; IBEW member; Bob Hopkins, AVVBA; Gene O'Kelly, Business Manager for IBEW; Mary Lou Austin, President of the USO; Mike Watson, USO; Mark Steele, AVVBA; Duke Doubleday, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army; Bryan Tate, Cary King, Max Torrence, Rick Lester and Bob Babcock all of the AVVBA. The IBEW and AVVBA expect to raise over $40,000 for the Support Our Troops project during the season.

The Local, in a unique partnership with the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association, has raised $12,000.00 to support the work of the USO. When you go to a Braves Game and pay to park in the lot, the funds are collected by Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association volunteers. The money supports the efforts and mission of the USO—to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to uniformed military personnel. To date, the partnership has generated $12,000.00 in support of the USO. Local 613 President Max Mount, Business Manager Gene O'Kelley and the members of LBEW Local 613 are proud their facility can now help the community and troops in this unique way. Access the parking lot from either Pryor St. or Pulliam St. Parking is cheaper than at some of the nearby lots and supports a great cause. Hope to see you there!
