United Way Youth IDA (Individual Development Account) program

Providing opportunities for youth in the metro Atlanta area the tools needed to gain and benefit from savings and assets

The Initiative

The United Way Youth IDA (Individual Development Account) program was created to help young men and women from low-to-moderate-income families become more literate in financial education, maintain working budgets, establish positive relationships with mainstream financial institutions and increase their savings toward their post-secondary education or business start-up.

Criteria

  • Will graduate from high school in 2009
  • OR - will graduate from high school in May/June 2008 AND be enrolled in a post-secondary institution in the metro Atlanta area by fall semester
  • Or you are currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution as a freshman or sophomore in the metro Atlanta area
  • No older than 21 years of age
  • Eligible to open a Type II Custodial Account with Washington Mutual prior to March 31, 2008 ($100 to open)
  • Eligible to save between $250 and $1,000
  • Resident of the 13 counties served by United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta
  • Employed or demonstrate a source of legitimate income
  • Participants must demonstrate capacity, desire and commitment to pursue post-secondary education or micro enterprise start-up.
  • Lower-to-moderate-income youth

Mission and Vision of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta

Mission of the United Way Youth IDA program

The program provides financial education, promotes community service and encourages a habit of regular savings and responsible money management for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in metro Atlanta.

Youth IDA personal savings program

The Youth IDA program is a 12–24 month matched savings program designed to promote a pattern of regular savings, responsible spending and budgeting for low-to-moderate-income youth ages 14–18 in metro Atlanta.

Match money
The savings of each participant will be matched on a 2:1 ratio. Participants may choose to save $250, $500 or $1,000.

Goals and objectives

The United Way Youth IDA program uses four components to address the needs and interests of participants: (1) financial literacy training, (2) habit of regular savings, (3) participating in volunteer activities and (4) access to capital for post-secondary or microenterprise start-up.
