Our Volunteer Involvement Program provides employee training for non-profit board engagement opportunities.
United Way of Greater Atlanta started VIP in 1992 in order to identify, recruit and place diverse leaders from greater Atlanta into policy making roles to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit agencies in our community. Since its inception, more than 2,000 graduates have provided service to more than 350 nonprofit governance boards and committees throughout greater Atlanta.
What is VIP?
United Way’s VIP is a 10-week, 40-hour training program offered in spring, summer and fall. It is designed to develop and enhance leadership skills, increase diverse volunteer participation in nonprofit board and leadership positions, in the greater Atlanta communities. VIP gives participants the tools to serve as effective board members of local nonprofit agencies. Workshops include fundraising, strategic planning, marketing, and financial and legal decision making.
Applications are solicited community-wide. The selection committee reviews applications and selects no more than 25 individuals per class. The selection criteria are designed to recruit a group of demonstrated leaders who are diverse in their ethnicity, profession and community service. Summer Training Dates
June 11th and 25th: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
July 9th and 23rd: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
**The application deadline is Friday, May 13, 2016. Please include a headshot with your completed application. Upon acceptance into the program, a $100 non-refundable Board Commitment Fee is due at the first training session and $400 Fundraising exercise is due by the end of the program.

AGENCIES SEEKING BOARD MEMBERS:
Is your nonprofit agency seeking qualified candidates for your board of directors? VIP is a free, program of the United Way of Greater Atlanta that connects nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan Atlanta area with qualified board candidates.
VIP specializes in recruiting volunteers with backgrounds in financial management, accounting, marketing, public relations, law, human resources, information technology, operational management, etc.
In order to participate, nonprofits need to fit the following criteria:
- must be a 501c3; municipal, county, state and/or federal agency serving the public; or private (nonprofit) school within the 13-county UWMA service area (Butts, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale)
- must have at least one full time paid employee
- must have a business address (other than P.O. box)
- must submit a list of your current board members
United Way VIP is an inclusive program. If you fit these criteria please complete the agency application. Requests from nonprofit organizations that do not meet all of the criteria but believe they would be a valuable participant and can demonstrate past performance in these areas, will be considered. Please note that VIP does not guarantee a match.
