YPL: How has United Way and YPL helped you?
Joanna: United Way has helped me develop a better understanding of the needs in the community and focus my efforts on those particular areas. I also enjoy the networking aspect of YPL.
YPL: What do you think are your greatest personal accomplishments?
Joanna: I have completed five half marathons. So technically, two and a half full marathons.
YPL: What do you think are your greatest professional accomplishments?
Joanna: Since joining Graphic Packaging International in 2012, I have had so many wonderful opportunities to grow in my career. Recently, I have been given the chance to lead the community involvement team at our corporate office. The impact that a passionate group of people can have on the community is always amazing to me. I also recently received my Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.
YPL: Why do you choose to give to United Way?
Joanna: I love how strategic United Way is in selecting different focus areas and organizations to support. United Way has an incredible grasp of the needs of our community and is working hard to close those gaps.
YPL: What’s your biggest concern within the community?
Joanna: Education. I think that other issues in the community, such as hunger and homelessness, often stem from a lack of education at an early age. There are many kids that may not get the support they need at home. We need to rely on our school systems and the organizations supported by United Way to give these kids direction and hope.
YPL: What would you tell someone who is considering joining YPL?
Joanna: YPL is a great avenue for anyone looking to get involved in the community and meet new people. YPL does a wonderful job with planning a variety of different events, both social and volunteer based. All you have to do is show up and enjoy meeting new people and giving back.
YPL: What is your favorite YPL event or experience and why?
Joanna: My favorite YPL event is the HoliDay of Service. Last year, I had the opportunity to co-lead the team at the Genesis Shelter. We had a group that prepared brunch and another group that decorated the halls for their Christmas party. We then all met at Red Brick Brewery for a happy hour. It was a blast!
YPL: What are your hobbies/interests?
Joanna: I love doing anything outside; hiking, biking, fishing, etc. I also love running and going to the gym. I enjoy spending time with my family and the cutest Golden Retriever around, Dylan.
YPL: If you could speak with anyone past or living, who would it be?
Joanna: I would enjoy the opportunity to speak with Michelle Obama.
YPL: Who in the world (past or living) do you most admire and why?
Joanna: That’s a tough one, but I would have to say my grandma. She taught me to appreciate the little things and not to sweat the small stuff. I try to remind myself of this anytime I get stressed or worried about something.
