On February 22, the United Way VIP alumni attended a Legislative Day at the Capitol. The Georgia Capitol sponsors this event to give constituents a first-hand experience of the legislative branch in session. Our host was Georgia State Senator and fall 2016 United VIP graduate, Senator Tonya Anderson.
Senator Anderson has been devoted to passing bills that bring quality education to children. The United Way 2017 Public Policy and Advocacy Agenda is focused on policy issues that advance the well-being of children. Senator Anderson shared with us what she believes has been the foundation of her success which included ensuring her efforts would bring pride to her family and her faith. She also shared that anyone embarking on a career in politics should know the community and county they will serve, know the names of their public officials, and research and understand the issues.
After our time with Senator Anderson, we visited the State Senate chambers and witnessed a legislative session. The United Way VIP was recognized for our commitment to producing leaders to serve the community and become effective board members. At the conclusion of our day, we understood our role in Georgia’s public policy and how we can get more involved.
