WE NEED YOUR HELP TO PROTECT UNITED WAY AND OTHER NONPROFITS IN TAX REFORM

Congress is currently working to enact a sweeping federal tax reform package before Christmas. And charities stand to be among the losers of the reform package. Both the House and Senate versions of tax reform incorporate proposals to double the standard deduction. While this may benefit some low and middle-income taxpayers, it would reduce the number of taxpayers able to claim an itemized tax deduction for charitable giving from 30% to 5%.

Currently the charitable tax deduction reduces the cost of giving to charity. Tax deductions matter to many donors: 31 percent of charitable donations are made in December as taxpayers look ahead to the next filing season.

The solution: A universal tax deduction for charitable gifts. To prevent the loss of charitable giving, United Ways and other nonprofits are urging tax writers to enact a universal charitable tax deduction. The switch would let all taxpayers deduct some or all of their donations from taxable income even if they don’t itemize.

Here’s what you can do to help: raise your voice and tell our Senators and your congressman or congresswoman to fight for charities!  Click here to send a message.
