AAP’s Blue Light in the Basement Rent party pays homage to the rent parties hosted by many African-Americans in the 1960’s.

Did You Know? In the 1960’s many African-Americans hosted “rent parties” featuring live music, food, and dancing as a solution to the growing housing crisis and unaffordable rise in renter costs. Rent parties helped pay the rent and acted as a getaway from the everyday hardships and discrimination.

United Way of Greater Atlanta and the City of Atlanta’s COVD-19 Emergency Housing Assistance Program continue to work for the well-being of children, families, and communities to ensure equitable opportunities are accessible for all regardless of race or zip code.
