The Community-Based Doula Initiative reduces the number of low birth-weight babies and pre-term births through trained doulas who serve within their communities.
In Greater Atlanta, one in every 11 babies is born at a low birth rate and are more likely to suffer severe health problems, while their families suffer from increased emotional and financial stress.
United Way provides the funding, training and support to equip doula programs to reach underserved women in their communities during pregnancy, birth and the early months of parenting.
In 2015, we served 541 families. Among the women enrolled, 96 percent gave birth to full-term babies and 94 percent had babies who were born at a healthy weight.
